How to Let Go of Sentimental Items and Start Decluttering

Decluttering your home is a common task on every to-do list. Everyone has some degree of clutter in their home. Identifying clutter is simple, but overcoming the need to collect is difficult. We gather items for a variety of reasons, but the more we gain, the less space we have, both physically and mentally. Decluttering is an easy concept but difficult in practice. Why do we keep so many items in our homes, what’s stopping us from throwing them out, and what does successfully decluttering your home look like? Once you have an answer to these questions, you’ll feel less anxious, overwhelmed, and unhappy as your home becomes organized again.

If Home Decluttering is so Easy, What’s Holding You Back?

There are many emotional hurdles related to having a decluttered home. It’s hard to let go of important belongings, no matter how small they may be. Some people aren’t sure where to start. There may be so much clutter in your home that you aren’t sure where to start organizing and how to store whatever is left over.

Your mind is telling you that certain items are too important to leave behind or let go. These can be anything from furniture to playing cards. Sometimes, you can’t help but attribute sentimentality to many items due to how long you’ve had them, where they come from, or even due to the memories associated with them.

The Fear of Reorganizing

Clutter tends to sit in the same places in your home and pile up over time. Overflowing book shelves or packed closets are a sign that clutter is building up and you need to start thinking about what can stay and what should go. While thinking about it is easy, actually committing to the clutter-free change is hard.

The apprehension of parting with some items is a major contributor to clutter. You may fear needing these items in the future, guilty around some of them going unused, or anxious about losing memories around these items. Due to these factors, many people hold on to non-essential items and add to their household clutter.

You may also be struggling to make the ultimate decision to eliminate clutter. What to retain, discard, and organize whatever may lead you to a standstill. You aren’t sure where to begin, so you simply don’t. Every time the idea to reorganize comes up, you feel overwhelmed all over again and simply go back to the status quo, as the workload you’re facing seems monumental.

How a Decluttering Mindset Improves Your Health

Overcoming these mental blocks can lead to more than just less clutter in your home. A clear environment leads to a clear decluttering mindset and gives you a sense of control over your life. You aren’t forced to constantly seek out items or mentally compartmentalize where certain items are located. A cleaner home leads to less anxiety and stress, as a clear environment reflects a clear mind.

However, reaching this point is a challenge. It requires determination and commitment to overcome your stress and anxiety. You have to be prepared for hard work, and have an idea on what you want to store and where to store it versus what you’d like to throw away. Decluttering your home leads to a better life, but it takes time and dedication to reach that point.
